Rootsmagic For Mac

RootsMagic genealogy software stores and organizes large volumes of data, such as marriage dates, health information, burial dates, occupations and religious affiliations. The interface is pleasant and easy to use. The research tools are excellent, and the hints are among the best I’ve reviewed, but the chart quality is disappointing. RootsMagic is a Windows program and will not run natively on a Mac. We do however have many Mac users who run RootsMagic using Windows emulators on their Mac. A Windows emulator lets you run Windows and Windows programs on your Mac. Page 4 of 4 - Rootsmagic Mac version 8 - posted in RootsMagic for Mac: × Rooty, youre correct. RM support doesnt really seem too concerned about Mac users and the impending Catalina release. The new FTM is 64-bit compliant and RM really should start to be concerned. RM likely cant issue a new 64-bit crossover version. As you noted, its out of their control.

At over 11 years old now, RootsMagic has stood the test of time, and has proved itself to be one of the major genealogy programs that is available for those using Windows computers. However over the past few years we have seen a definite shift in users changing from Windows computers to Mac. And apart from the addition of Family Tree Maker for Mac, the Mac genealogy software scene really hasn’t changed for several years, with Reunion, Mac Family Tree and iFamily being the other dominant programs.

Meanwhile users of RootsMagic have been crying out for a Mac version, and the creators have listened, as they have just announced MacBridge for RootsMagic 6, stating that …

“MacBridge for RootsMagic 6 allows you easily install and run RootsMagic on your Mac in mere minutes with almost no additional setup or configuration. MacBridge for RootsMagic is different than other solutions you may be familiar with. For starters, it does not install Windows on your Mac. It also does not create a slow and bulky virtual computer. It runs right on your Mac, using your Mac file system. You can even put the RootsMagic icon on your dock for easy one-click access! So while we are busily working on an actual native Mac version of RootsMagic, MacBridge for RootsMagic 6 gives you the ability to work on a Mac today.

MacBridge is not RootsMagic 6 for Mac, but rather is it a program that you need to download to make RootsMagic work like it should – on a Mac. Their website states that …

“we are busily working on a Mac version. We have many Mac users who would love this and we love to make our users happy. MacBridge for RootsMagic 6 gives our users the ability to work on a Mac today while we work on our actual Mac version.”

Who knows when RootsMagic 7 will make an appearance, but if you are a RootsMagic user who has recently changed from PC to Mac, or are thinking of it – it seems from initial feedback that MacBridge does seem to be a good option. Comments from RootsMagic users who were using the program with Windows emulation software were saying that it was slow and crashed, however using MacBridge make it work like a breeze.

RootsMagic is a genealogy software program designed and written by RootsMagic, Inc, a United States software design and development company founded by Bruce Buzbee in 1987.[4] Bruce originally wrote the program Family Origins.[5][6][7]

Features[edit]

RootsMagic is a genealogy program that assists family historians in tracking, organizing, printing, and sharing family history.[8][9]

  • The software was originally developed as Windows-only, but is now available in Mac OS X.

  • It is set up to import or export data from or to the Ancestry.com website.
  • It allows backup to a hard drive, flash drive, CD, to DropBox, or to Google Drive.
  • It has four navigation views:
    • Standard pedigree view, with five or six generations visible;
    • Family view (allows to look at the family unit, and navigate back and forth between generations;
    • Descendants view (two to seven generations);
    • Timeline View, showing a chronological list of events in the subject's life, including major events in their parents' siblings' and children's lives
  • 'Drag and Drop' feature to allow copying individuals, families, and entire extended families from one database to another.
